The use of ceramic as a dental prosthetic is a relatively recent technological advancement, and it all started with one Hollywood dentist. His movie magic porcelain fronts have evolved to an enormous market today. Not only has this saved many broken and cracked teeth, but it has immense benefits cosmetically, as well!
This, alongside dental implant technology, pushed dentistry more than any other advancements of the 20th century. If you currently have concerns with the structure of your smile, these may bring needed stability and function. Also, if you are looking for a crisp, beautiful smile, porcelain veneers may be a fantastic solution for you. Today, your Livonia, MI dentist explains some of the history of this procedure, and how it can help bring new life to an old and damaged smile!
Origins
In 1929, a Los Angeles, California dentist by the name of Dr. Charles Pincus was hired to create a special effect prosthetic for an actor. He decided to use porcelain, a particularly durable translucent ceramic. This worked exceedingly well, but it was always intended for short-term use.
Thirty years later, the process of etching expanded the possibilities available to cosmetic and restorative dentists. Using an acidic wash, the surface of the enamel is made to be porous and uneven. This is the opposite of our desired enamel, but it creates a surface that holds adhesives very well. The tiny bumps and waves give cement something to hold on to, which allows for a more permanent solution.
A Combination
The connection of these two technologies really spurred the porcelain veneer revolution of the 1980s. Suddenly, repairing a broken or chipped tooth was in reach! All while keeping to a fairly normal amount of oral health maintenance.
Today, many actors and public personalities choose to have veneers placed solely for cosmetic purposes. Famously, Brad Pitt had his removed for the movie “Fight Club” so that he would have a rougher look for his character. While we certainly would not suggest that decision, it shows the benefit they provide!
A Custom Solution
Another huge benefit of porcelain veneers is their customization when improving your smile. When skilled ceramicists create these, they can adjust scale and shape in order to make the perfect fit for you. All while avoiding the trauma that comes with traditional alignment procedures.
Misalignment can be addressed often alongside your initial concerns. So for this reason, always mention any possible improvements you’d like to see during your consultation. The more information your oral professional has, the better the result!
