We often urge our patients to see us for regular checkups because these visits can allow us to identify the early signs of cavities. But how do we identify tooth decay? Employing our expertise, as well as advanced technology, we can perform exams with accuracy and precision. What technology do we use to examine your smile?
Checkups and Warning Signs
We always recommend a checkup once every six months. After all, cavities typically takes an average of six months to form, so attending routine visits allows us a greater chance to identify the problem in the earliest stages. If in between visits you notice your teeth feel sensitive or ache, and the discomfort doesn’t abate after 48 hours, then contact our office. These could be potential warning signs of tooth decay.
DIAGNOdent Laser Technology
Using a handheld wand, we can examine your teeth and identify not only the presence of cavities, but demineralization as well, which often occurs before a cavity forms. The laser technology can point out these problem areas and assess the likelihood of decay forming, allowing our team to take action and protect your smile.
Intraoral Cameras
We also use intraoral cameras. Digital cameras are imbedded in a thin, hand held device that allows us to comfortably take pictures of your smile. We can then use these highly detailed digital images to obtain an accurate look at your current oral health. We can locate areas of potential risk, and recommend the most appropriate treatment options.
How Do You Treat Decay?
In most cases, we use fillings. A metal-free composite resin is placed into the area after the decay is removed. We then sculpt the filling as it cures under a light. Finally, we polish it for a lifelike appearance. The entire procedure takes just one visit and can protect your smile from serious oral health complications.
