In modern dentistry, our main goal is to protect your teeth from disease, and prevent problems before they arise. Practicing excellent preventive care at home is the best way to avoid tooth decay, gum disease, and other common ailments of the mouth. You should occasionally examine your hygiene routine and decide if there are any areas that need improvement. Proper techniques are vital in making sure that your teeth receive the best care and that no harm is being caused.
Buy a New Toothbrush
Every 3 months you should dispose of your old toothbrush and purchase a new, soft-bristled brush for proper cleaning of your teeth. Over time, with normal amount of use, your toothbrush may become rough or harder than it should be, which may cause small abrasions on your tooth enamel and gums. Also, millions of bacteria tend to accumulate in old toothbrushes after some time of being stored in the bathroom, so consider storing your new brush within a closed area such as a cabinet or vanity.
Floss EVERY Day
Brushing is vital, but flossing may be the next most important thing you can do to keep your mouth healthy. Toothbrushes can leave particles behind in hard to reach places; which if not removed, can harden into harmful tartar and cause gum disease or even tooth loss. Flossing should be performed with approved string floss, or other interdental cleaner at least once a day. Make sure to floss between all of your teeth, paying close attention to the spaces between your teeth and gums where bacteria accumulate.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
At home preventive care is essential in maintaining excellent oral health, but you should also visit your dentist as often as recommended (usually every 6 months) for a thorough examination and cleaning. During your office visit, a hygienist will remove any tartar buildup that accumulated since your last visit and your dentist will check for abnormalities and signs of disease.
