A rumor spreads similar to bacteria in the mouth. If there is a lack of preventive oral care, the infectious bacteria will grow and flourish. Similar to this concept, rumor’s spread due to a lack of knowledge. As someone brings forth a rumor, those without the know-how or knowledge of mentioned subject typically fall into the trap of believing the hearsay, but those educated, whether self-taught or not, tend to question the speaker. Dr. Stewart would like to educate you on how root canal’s relieve pain, not cause it, so that when you encounter someone complaining about their RC therapy, you can educate them with the truth.
Tooth Anatomy 101
To better understand how RCT relieves pain, it’s a great idea to learn the anatomy of a tooth.
The outer layer of a tooth, which you can see if you open your mouth and look at your teeth with a mirror, is the enamel. This layer of the tooth protects the dentin like a helmet protects a football player or a motorcycle rider.
The dentin is the hub for all the nerves and blood vessels coming from the inner chamber of your tooth called the pulp. As a tooth develops the pulp supplies it the needed nutrients, but once the tooth is mature, the connective tissues provide direct nourishment.
However, if the pulp becomes infected, it will affect the overall health of the tooth, and, if allowed to advance, the health of the surrounding gums.
RCT Basics and More
Root canal therapy exists to treat an infected or inflamed pulp. During the treatment, the doctor will remove any infected pulp and carefully clean and disinfect the chamber. Once disinfected and prepared, the chamber will be filled with a rubber sealant.
After the sealant hardens, the doctor will place a crown on the remaining tooth, fitting it to match the remaining natural teeth.
RCT usually takes one visit, but can require more than one visit, because the patient’s oral condition determines the required time to complete the treatment.
