Should I Try Veneers Or Bonding?

stewart-bonding-veneerWhen a tooth becomes chipped, or if you develop permanent discoloration that doesn’t respond to traditional teeth whitening techniques, what should you do? We actually have two different cosmetic procedures that can help. Should you try bonding or veneers to improve the beauty of your smile?

Common Esthetic Concerns

One of the more common issues people talk to us about involves discoloration. In most cases, teeth stains can be removed with teeth whitening. However, permanent stains (also known as intrinsic discoloration) form below the enamel and may need to be masked. These can be caused by fluorosis, injury to the teeth, or the use of tetracycline. Other serious cosmetic issues include problems with the shape of the teeth.

Dental Bonding

With dental bonding, we use a composite resin to restore missing tooth structure and to mask stains. We can also close gaps between teeth. The resin is applied to the tooth in layers, then sculpted as the material cures under a light. Finally, the dentist will polish the tooth for a more lifelike appearance. The entire procedure takes one visit.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed onto the front of the tooth, reshaping and shading it. We can use them to address damaged or malformed teeth, mask teeth stains, address gaps between teeth, and even correct the appearance of minor alignment issues. Placement takes two visits and each veneer is custom-made.

Which One is Right for Me?

That depends on the teeth receiving restoration. For minor chips, or issues with a rear tooth’s shade, dental bonding makes a cost-effective solution. However, for problems with front facing teeth, veneers are a more lifelike option. We will carefully examine your smile to help you decide which option will work best for you.
